Monday, November 25, 2013 - Director of the Texas Memorial Museum, Dr. Ed Theriot

Director of the Texas Memorial Museum, Ed Theriot describes some of the treasures of the Texas Memorial Museum on the University of Texas at Austin Campus.  The museum has lost 90% of its funding, which will cut virtually all museum activities.  Though the Italian marble walls of the building will stay open for museum guests, it will no longer update exhibits or host special events.  Ed Theriot describes the giant Texas Pterosaur, the largest flying animal ever found- one of Time Life's top 100 scientific discoveries in the 20th century.  We learn about diatoms, which are tiny 20-50 micrometer sized living creatures, helpful for studying water quality and other changes in environmental phenomena like oil exploration.  Diatoms make about half the oxygen we breathe!
